Promote your tool, service or upcoming event - Reach Founders

Good morning,

Every year, Shopify releases its Editions updates. This Fall’s is called Exponential.

Why that name?

Shopify says each merchant benefits from the scale of its network.

Product discovery can happen inside AI assistants. Shop Pay can complete purchases there. And fraud signals gathered across stores can help protect the next one.

AI and agentic commerce are the clearest signals.

But the theme is bigger: Shopify is using its network to give merchants more ways to reach buyers, more protection at checkout, and less work to run the store. That is how Shopify explains Exponential.

That deserves a special issue.

We went through all 11 categories to find the changes that affect a founder’s decisions, not just the feature list.

Black Friday is close, so we’ll start with two updates you can use now. Then we’ll cover the bigger shifts.

Today: We unpack Exponential, check two BFCM changes, map all 11 categories and show which updates deserve your attention first.

The two changes to check before Black Friday

1. Your sale can launch as one event

A BFCM campaign often needs four things to change together: the store design, the products available, the discounts, and sometimes checkout.

Rollouts lets you prepare those changes as one scheduled event. The image below is Shopify’s BFCM example. Notice that the theme, catalog, discount and checkout are all in the same launch.

One schedule for the customer-facing changes that need to happen together.

Before you schedule yours:

  • List every change customers should see when the sale starts. Put the relevant theme, catalog, checkout configuration and discounts into the rollout.

  • Check the start time, end time and store timezone. Then preview the complete experience, not just the sale banner.

2. Your conversion rate may move without more orders

Shopify has changed how it counts sessions. It now filters identified bots by default and includes some visits that were previously missed.

Because conversion rate uses sessions as its denominator, the percentage can rise or fall while orders and sales stay flat. That matters when you compare this BFCM with an earlier period.

When you review performance:

  • Use post-update sessions and conversion rate as your new baseline. Shopify rolled out the measurement change in September.

  • Put orders, sales and customer count next to sessions. If only the session-based numbers changed, investigate measurement before changing your strategy.

Those two checks protect the launch and the readout. The rest of the Edition changes how customers discover, buy and receive your products.

What matters across Shopify’s 11 buckets

Shopify announced changes across 11 parts of commerce. Here’s the founder’s map:

  1. Agentic: What AI shopping agents know about your products and policies.

  2. Sidekick: AI that can prepare store changes, not just suggest them.

  3. Online: Build a storefront with Canvas and schedule a coordinated sale.

  4. Merchandising: Give each sales channel the product data it needs.

  5. Retail: Carry an online shopping journey into a physical store.

  6. Payments: Manage fraud, disputes and local payment options.

  7. Operations: See more of what changed inside your store.

  8. Shop: Let shoppers discover and buy across brands.

  9. Marketing: Read channel performance and control how offers appear.

  10. Fulfillment: Make delivery promises clearer before purchase.

  11. Developer: Let outside AI experiences find products, build carts and guide checkout.

That last one sounds like a technical update. But it changes where a buying decision can happen: outside your storefront.

If an AI assistant can guide a customer from product discovery to checkout, what does your store need to get right before that conversation begins?
