Brands That Stick

Your customers decide your brand positioning(not you)

Sarah Levinger is a consumer psychologist and brand strategist who has worked with 150+ DTC founders.

Last week, she shared 29 things she's learned about building a strong, steadily growing brand.

One of which was:

"Your positioning isn't what you say about yourself. It's what your customers say when you're not in the room."

This is the one DTC brands get wrong the most. You spend weeks crafting your tagline and think that's your positioning.

Your real positioning is in the words customers use when they tell a friend about you.

What to do with this:

  • Go pull your reviews from the last year and look for the words that keep repeating.

  • Want to speed it up? Paste all your reviews into Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to find the most repeated words, phrases, and themes. It'll surface patterns in seconds that would take you hours manually.

  • Then take those exact words and put them in your ads, your email subject lines, your product page headlines, etc.

So tell me: what's your biggest influencer marketing challenge right now? Finding the right creators, negotiating deals, tracking ROI, anything. Hit reply and let me know.

Sourcing Secrets

The cheapest supplier usually costs you the most

When you’re starting out, it’s tempting to pick the lowest quote on Alibaba.

Cheaper product = more profit, right?

Not always.

Sourcing expert Kian Golzari who has sourced 2,500+ products for brands like the NBA and the Olympics, calls this one of the most common and costly mistakes DTC founders make.

Why super-cheap quotes are risky:

  • They may use low-quality materials

  • Or they’re just a middleman (not the real factory), so they don’t control quality

Either way, you deal with returns, bad reviews, and delays.

How to vet suppliers properly:

  1. Filter for verified suppliers on Alibaba. Look for third-party verification badges from SGS, Intertek, or TUV. This confirms the factory actually exists and has the workforce they claim.

  2. Use ImportYeti.com. Search for big brands in your category and see exactly which factories they use.

This lets you find proven factories instead of guessing on Alibaba.

  3. Ask directly: "Are you a factory or a trading company?"

Trading company = reseller (good for small orders)

Factory = makes the product (better for big orders + pricing)
